Why Theta?

Why Theta: Features

Leading Women

Nearly 150 years ago, Kappa Alpha Theta was founded as the first Greek-letter fraternity for women. Our founders recognized dedication, intelligence, and commitment in one another, and they also understood the potential of the college women who would follow in their footsteps. They were leading the way for women in higher education.

In the decades since then, Theta has continued to be recognized as a leading women’s group. Our ideas and programs have often been on the cutting edge—as individual and as chapters, we are known for leading in our communities and on our campuses. We understand that leadership is not an office held or a title conferred. We know that every Theta has the capacity to create positive change in herself, in her chapter, in her Fraternity ... in fact, in the world.

Being a Theta leads women into a life of friends, experiences, and goals that she might not have had otherwise. Being a Theta leads a woman to personal excellence, offering her ways to become her best self.

We are Kappa Alpha Theta. We are leading women.

Scholarship

While the sisterhood of Kappa Alpha Theta is important in all of our lives and is a huge part of the college experience, scholarship remains the highest aim of Theta woman.
Our chapter has a 3.02 average GPA and we are proud to say that 60% of our members have raised their GPA between their first and second quarter of membership in the sorority. Our chapter strives to help all its members achieve their full academic potential. Every quarter, our Scholarship Director works with sisters who are struggling academically in order to create individual plans to improve performance. We celebrate academic success and improvement both weekly at chapter meeting and at our annual Scholarship Banquet, where sisters and UCSC faculty members gather to honor academic excellence and commitment. Sisters are recognized for their achievements, but also have the opportunity to honor professors and TAs who have enriched their educational experience. Our chapter provides guidance for every sister through our Academic Mentor program, where each sister is paired with an older sister in a similar major to help them navigate its challenges, both academic and personal. Every quarter, the education branch also hosts study hours and events like resume, interview and LinkedIn workshops to help sisters become more well-rounded. In addition, Kappa Alpha Theta offers scholarships and grants to sisters, as well as connecting collegians to alumni who can help them establish their career after graduation.

Sisterhood

The sisterhood within a Theta chapter is one of the strongest bonds that members experience in their lifetime. Theta sisterhood can lift you up in ways you never thought possible and turn friends into a family for life. In our time together, we create countless memories and life-long friendships with one another through Theta. Although we hold this sense of sisterhood close to our hearts every day, we are also able to bond in a unique way through our amazing sisterhood events! Last year, we made candles at Glow, had a bonfire at the beach, had a Theta Christmas party, visited the Mystery Spot, went to the pumpkin patch, held movie nights, and attended 2 sisterhood retreats together! This year, we held a holiday ornament-making party, a super fun retreat, and went bowling! These events have been an endless source of smiles, fun and laughs that draw our sisters closer than ever. We are so thankful for our sisterhood and each other and we can't wait to see what this next year holds!

Social

As members of Kappa Alpha Theta at UCSC, our sisters enjoy an incredible semi-formal in fall and our formal, the Golden Gala, in the spring. Sisters and their dates dress up and enjoy a night full of dancing, food, and fun! We also have social events every quarter, including a night at the roller rink and a trip to a Giants game in San Francisco. Through these and other social events, we are able to make memories not just with our sisters, but with some of the incredible fraternity gentlemen on campus, other Panhellenic sisters, friends and community!

Programs

Sisters Supporting Sisters

Sisters Supporting Sisters is the Kappa Alpha Theta’s mental health and wellness initiative. Theta has worked with mental health experts to implement educational programming to address women’s mental health and wellness issues such as self-image, addictive behaviors, and healthy relationships.

Emerging Leaders Institute

The Emerging Leaders Institute provides leadership education and development to undergraduate members, with an emphasis on emerging leaders. The goal of this institute is to develop leaders who will empower others to become agents of change in their chapters, on their campuses and in their communities.

CEO Leadership Academy

The CEO Leadership Academy is a leadership workshop for Theta’s chief executive officers. The curriculum is designed to help Theta CEOs apply leadership practices and learned skills that can not only be applied to their Theta position, but also to other areas of their lives.

Service Trip

Theta hosts an annual service trip for our members. Thetas from all college chapters have the opportunity to participate in this immersive experience and provide direct service to a community by building a house through Habitat for Humanity, visiting a local CASA program, and other activities to spread the widest influence for good.

Grand Convention

Kappa Alpha Theta’s Grand Convention is held every other year at the end of June. At Convention, collegians play a vital role in the policy-making of the Fraternity as they are the majority vote in determining governing laws.
